PRE-SEASON OLYMPICS
After finishing 3rd two years ago and 2nd last fall, Bryan Foss (Jr.,
Osseo, MN) won the UMD Basketball Pre-season Olympics. He defeated
two-time defending champion Ryan Breidenbach (Jr., Oregon, WI) by just
4 points. Neither of those players was a member, however, of the
winning team as John Emerson (Sr., New Richmond, WI), Sean Seaman (Sr.,
Duluth, MN), Brian St. Peter (So., Menominee, MI), Jordan Nuness (So.,
Eden Prairie, MN), and Ryan Meissner (Jr., Osseo, MN)hung on to win.
They only won 4 events out of the 15 but had a consistent effort in all
events to finish on top. The individual crown went to Foss, even though
Breidenbach won 8 of the 15 events. Coming into the Bulldog Shuttle run
(a 850 yard shuttle run) only 7 points ahead Foss placed second to
Breidenbach and lost only 3 points.
We set 5 record this fall in our Olympics, Matt Hockett (Jr.,McFarland,
WI) broke his own sit-up record completing 98 in two minutes, and also
broke the leg press record doing 2.5 times his body weight 30 times.
The other 3 records belong to Ryan Breidenbach as he improved upon his
own records in the 3 Mile run (18:35), the 1 Mile run (5:11) and the 12
Minute run (2.25 miles).
I've attached both the Team and Individual Olympic results as well as
the records in each event.

It was a great pre-season with our team improving it's conditioning and
strength and not sustaining any injuries. We head into the first day of
practice Saturday (Oct. 15) with everyone healthy. John Vaudreuil has
fully recovered from two back surgeries during the summer and is
regaining his conditioning.

UMD HALL OF FAME
UMD Athletics will induct former basketball player, Bill Mattson(Class
of '62). Bill, who passed away in December of 2002, is 5th on UMD
all-time scoring list and averaged 16.2 points per game during his
career. He also holds the distinction of being the only UMD Bulldog
basketball player taken in the NBA draft.

UMD BASKETBALL 75TH YEAR
Being that this is the 75th year of UMD Basketball we are going to send
ballots to all alumni on our mailing list asking you to vote for an
all-75th year team. We've teamed with Josten's, who has agreed to
sponsor the award and is providing each of the honored alumni with a
significant recognition award and a copy that will be displayed in our
basketball locker room.
We have compiled a list of 75 nominees. The top 15 vote getters will be
the all-75th year team. Those 15 will be invited to our Alumni Game
week-end (Feb 4th) for a ceremony. Look for that voting sheet in the
mail before the end of October.

OPENING OF PRACTICE
Saturday we being practice for the 75th year of UMD Basketball. We open
the exhibition schedule in just 3 weeks vs. Athletes in Action in
Romano Gym and then travel to Minnesota to play the Gophers in an
exhibition game Nov. 10th. If any of you are in town and ever want to
attend practice, please just let Coach Holquist or myself know and
we'll be happy to give you our schedule.

It's great to hear from all of you who respond the these messages!!
