Facilities Management has announced a power outage for three buildings
on Monday morning, May 15, beginning at 4 AM. These buildings are MWAH,
Life Science, and Heller Hall. Because ITSS has major computer systems
in MWAH and Heller Hall, it will be necessary for us to shut down most
services housed in these two buildings.

Some services will be shut down starting Sunday evening, and most other
services will be shut down starting at 3 AM on Monday morning. Services
to be shut down include the main campus web server (www.d.umn.edu) and
about half of our email services (IMAP and POP). We plan to restore
services as soon as the power situation stabilizes. Some details follow:

Email services - Available until 3AM Monday. Some customers are on
servers located elsewhere on campus, and those customers will likely be
able to read and send email. Email to be delivered will be queued and
delivered once power is restored.

Web services - Basic service available until 3AM Monday. Some services,
including service request forms, will be unavailable starting at 8PM on
Sunday.

Office Server – Limited service after 10PM on Sunday.

Distributed printing from the Twin Cities - Available until 3AM Sunday.

Network services, Internet link, general browsing - Available except in
the buildings without power.

Telephone services - Available except for some ITSS staff phones, which
use newer technology that requires power.

We will be relying on generator power during the duration of the outage.
On rare occasions our equipment will not run properly on generator
power. If that happens all UMD central systems and networking services
will be interrupted, and telephone service may be interrupted.

Once power is restored we estimate two to three hours to restore all
services. We will bring web and email services up first.
