[Studenttech.announce] email update and user moves

To The Campus Community:
ITSS is preparing to move users off of our two most heavily loaded
email servers and onto a fifth server that we have set up. We are
seeking volunteers who would like to move to the new server. If you
would like to move, please read on for details.
We will start moving users on Monday in batches. We will ask that you
log out and stay off of email during the hour in which your account is
slated to move. You may email helpdesk at d.umn.edu with this information:
1. your willingness to move
2. your phone number, and
3. any preference you might have for a convenient hour.
The Help Desk staff will sign people up for time slots on a first-
come, first-served basis, starting at 9 AM on Monday, April 26. They
will confirm your time slot via email.
The process for moving your mail will work as follows:
1. A new inbox will be established on the new server, and any new
incoming mail will be delivered to this new inbox.
2. Your old inbox will be renamed as inbox.20100426, where the last
two digits will change as the day of the month changes.
3. Your old inbox and all of your mail folders will be copied to the
new server.
4. We will call you when the conversion is done.
We will only be moving users from our two slow servers, so please
don't volunteer unless you have been experiencing slowness this week.
Thanks very much for your patience during this frustrating time. We
hope that by moving users on Monday and Tuesday we will make the
entire system zippy for everyone by Wednesday.
